| Abstract: | The Zeme Naga women continue to face significant barriers in their participation in local governance. It is largely due to the cultural norms backed by patriarchal customary laws. They prioritise men for leadership roles, and these societal expectations often restrict women to family responsibilities rather than encouraging their involvement in governance. This article will explore the role of traditional institutions alongside modern Local governance and highlight women’s participation in local governance. It will also highlight the challenges that the Zeme Naga women faced in participation in local governance. The article concludes by highlighting the amicable strategies for women’s empowerment within the structure of local governance. |
