Abstract:This paper explores the role and influence of the Mizoram People’s Forum (MPF), a distinctive church-backed civil society organization, on the electoral process in Mizoram. Established in 2006 by the state’s major churches, the MPF has emerged as a crucial force dedicated to combatting electoral malpractices and fostering free, fair and peaceful elections. This study posits that the MNF has fundamentally reshaped Mizoram’s political landscape by leveraging its moral and social authority to cultivate a culture of ‘clean politics’. Through its key strategies – including formalizing a code of conduct with political parties, limiting campaign expenditures, and implementing comprehensive voter education programs, the MPF has significantly diminished the power of money in politics and promoted a more transparent and accountable political environment. This research highlights that the MPF’s success is rooted in its extensive civil society network and the high level of public trust it enjoys. While recognizing certain limitations, the paper highlights that the MPF has established a unique and effective model for democratic reform, positioning Mizoram as an exemplary case of civil society serving as a powerful catalyst for electoral integrity.
