Abstract:Vidur Niti, embedded in the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata, represents one of the earliest systematic articulations of political wisdom in the Indian knowledge tradition. As an advisor to King Dhritarashtra, Vidura’s counsel transcends the immediate dynastic conflict and outlines enduring principles of governance, ethics, and statecraft. Unlike purely Machiavellian notions of political expediency, Vidur Nīti integrates dharma with political pragmatism, reflecting the Indian epistemological approach in which ethics and governance are inseparable. In the broader context of Indian Political Thought, Vidur Niti contributes to the tradition of Rajadharma, complementing texts such as the Arthashastra and Shanti Parva. Its insights remain relevant to contemporary political science, particularly in discourses on leadership, accountability, and ethical statecraft. Thus, the Vidur Niti serves as a bridge between ancient Indian philosophical ideals and practical governance.
