| Abstract: | The relationship between Shakespearean dramas and cinema has a long history, bound by a shared willingness to take on timeless stories, intricate characters, and difficult themes. The flavour of the present year, artificial intelligence, which upcycles old ingredients into modern fabric technology, will not be outdone; it has given the cinematic sandbox a new bucket of sweets to lick from. Emphasizing contemporary filmmaking practices, this chapter examines Shakespeare’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a mode of newness and schematizes it as an analogy for innovation and renovation in the Shakespearean tradition. This chapter, departing from the traditional hierarchical approach, explores the interplay between innovation and traditions. This could mean anything, from computer-generated scripts that mimic Bard’s manipulation of language to productions directed by an AI bot coded to mimic a specific character. It delves into the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of AI as a contemporary muse, while also considering its role in preserving, enhancing, and surpassing the boundaries of theatrical storytelling on the screen. Contrasting the humanist basis of Shakespearean theatre with AI’s computed creativity, this chapter foregrounds a compelling story of progress and continuity in the business of entertainment. |
