Abstract:Civil society has emerged as one of the most influential pillars of democratic governance in contemporary India. Functioning as an intermediary between the state and citizens, civil society organizations promote public participation, protect human rights, strengthen accountability, and contribute significantly to socio-economic development. This paper examines the concept, evolution, and role of civil society in India by analysing its historical foundations, theoretical perspectives, democratic functions, and contemporary relevance. It explores the contributions of voluntary organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), social movements, community-based organizations, and advocacy groups in promoting participatory governance, social justice, environmental protection, and inclusive development. The study further discusses the relationship between civil society and the Indian state, highlighting its role in policy advocacy, public awareness, service delivery, and democratic accountability. In addition, the paper critically examines the major challenges confronting civil society, including regulatory constraints, financial sustainability, political polarization, declining civic space, and issues of organizational transparency. The analysis suggests that despite these challenges, civil society continues to play an indispensable role in strengthening democratic institutions and advancing good governance. The paper concludes that constructive collaboration among government institutions, civil society organizations, academia, and citizens is essential for achieving sustainable development, protecting constitutional values, and enhancing democratic participation. A vibrant, autonomous, and accountable civil society remains fundamental to the realization of justice, equality, liberty, and inclusive governance in India.
