| Abstract: | Migration is a complex and multi-faceted phenomena which has a great impact on the economic, social and cultural life of the people both at the place of origin and destination. Migration from rural to urban areas in India is neither a new nor a recent phenomenon; however, the rate of rural-urban migration has increased over the years. There are more and more people migrating to urban areas in search of jobs, education, health care and various other facilities that are not available in the rural areas. However, such a move has resulted in negative consequences for the traditional village society. This paper is an attempt at understanding the various factors that have led to an increase in rural-urban migration and the socio-economic impact of migration on the traditional village society. The study is based on both primary and secondary data. Primary data has been collected through fieldwork using open-ended questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The findings of the paper suggest that rural-urban migration has led to the erosion of family ties, traditional community practices and pose a challenge to the overall interest of the traditional village society. |
